Great Smoky Mountain National Park

While in GSMNP, backcountry campers and thru hikers have to obtain a backcountry pass with planned itinerary. The itinerary had to include what shelters they plan to stay at each night. Hikers are required to stay at a shelter each night and can only camp if the shelters are full. This made our planning process difficult because we could no longer judge where we stopped for the night by how we felt but by where there were shelters. This often meant choosing between hiking 13 or 20 miles.
