We woke up at 5 a.m. to climb Clingman’s Dome for sunrise. We hiked the 2.5 miles with our headlamps on, no idea whether we’d have a clear morning or a good view from the top. We made it to Clingman’s by sunrise but the fog was so dense that we could barely see the observation tower in front of us. We made it to Newfound Gap by lunch, crossing into Tennessee for the first time. We were bombarded with questions from visitors at the state line as many tourists could tell we were all thru hikers by our look and scent. We hiked 21 miles to reach Peck’s Corner Shelter by dark.
