Today we hiked 21.5 miles to Hogback Ridge Shelter. We planned for a shorter day and took our time during the first climbs of the day. Our favorite part of the day was Exposed Ridge Trail. This part of the trail had us scaling boulders on the mountain ridge where we could see views of Asheville, NC. We climbed to the top of Big Butt for lunch and decided to push to the next shelter for the night, 8.7 miles away, as the possibility for breakfast trail magic was rumored. Right as we left Flint Mountain Shelter from our break, we ran into trail magic! A mother and daughter had hiked from their car carrying Easter cupcakes for hikers. This was just the boost we needed. We had a long, exhausting remainder of the hike but were excited for the promise of a trail magic breakfast only 2 miles away.
