4/12 Day 26

Today was the coldest day so far. We all stayed in our sleeping bags longer than usual to avoid the 20 degree temperatures. We hiked 7 miles to summit Roan Mountain. This would be our last climb above 6,000 feet until Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. We had lunch at Roan Mountain and warmed up in the sun. We didn’t see any snow but the trail was covered in ice near the summit. On our hike down, we ran into a family vacationing from Ohio who offered us beer and snacks. We took the rest of the day slow, climbed over a series of balds and reached Overmountain Shelter for the night. We hiked a total of 14.5 miles.
