5/5 Day 49

After breakfast, we hitched out of Buena Vista and managed to get on the trail by 9 a.m. It started raining as soon as we started hiking and would continue through the rest of the day. We started our day with a 2,000 foot climb to Bald Knob and Cold Mountain. We passed Cow Camp Gap Shelter where a suspicious murder from last hiking season is still being investigated. We crossed over Tar Jacket Ridge, a bald ridge at 3,847 feet. Our last climbs of the day were to Spy Rock Overlook and to The Priest Shelter. Our climb to the shelter was short and we wouldn’t summit The Priest until the following morning. The hike to The Priest summit is the second largest climb for southbound hikers and they say the mountain is named for the many prayers they give to make it to the top. We hiked 20.6 miles today.
