Joe and Kathleen- We both agreed that we liked the shelters of Maryland the best. All I the shelters we saw were either new, renovated or extremely well maintained. Since you are not allowed to camp primitively in MD, the tent sites at each shelter were incredible.
Least favorite part
Joe- running into a half dozen Boy Scout troops out for the weekend. Most came into camp late and were not courteous to other hikers.
Kathleen- no primitive camping allowed
Overall impression: Maryland was a beautiful state. It was strange for us to be flying through all of these states so quickly after being in Virgina for so long. The trail in Maryland started to get really rocky, perhaps a little taste of Pennsylvania to come. We hiked Maryland on the weekend so we saw a lot of day and weekend hikers out making the gamble for shelter space an interesting one.
