Camping in the White Mountains

The Whites have a series of huts that are staffed by a handful of ‘croo’ and that allow a certain number of thru hikers to stay per night. Hikers work in exchange for a place to sleep, dinner and breakfast. The sleeping arrangements usually consist of a place to set up on the dining room floor and meals are all-you-can-eat leftovers. If there are too many hikers, it’s too early in the day or they have no work, the croo can send hikers away. The only other options are camping at a pay area (work for stay is allowed here too) or stealth camping. Stealth camping is camping allowed in certain zones away from pay areas, huts, alpine zones, below tree line, on established ground and out of sight of the trail.
